{"id":15941,"date":"2023-03-16T22:36:57","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T03:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dlair.net\/austin\/?p=15941"},"modified":"2023-03-16T22:36:57","modified_gmt":"2023-03-17T03:36:57","slug":"spotlight-on-my-first-castle-panic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dlair.net\/austin\/spotlight-on-my-first-castle-panic\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight On: My First Castle Panic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My First Castle Panic<\/em>\u00a0is Fireside Games\u2019 pre-school-friendly version of their classic co-operative game\u00a0<em>Castle Panic<\/em>.\u00a0 Like\u00a0<em>Castle Panic<\/em>,\u00a0<em>My First Castle Panic<\/em>\u00a0charges you (and up to three of your friends) with defending a castle and its walls from a relentless horde of monsters.\u00a0 However, the game is streamlined by having a single path that must be defended and removing most of the math.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the radial board that has monsters coming in from all sides, the monsters in\u00a0<em>My First Castle Panic<\/em>\u00a0move along a single road.\u00a0 Every space on that road has a shape (circle, square, or triangle) and each shape is a color (red, blue, or green).<\/p>\n<p>To capture a monster and send them to the dungeon (a cleverly decorated space inside the game\u2019s box), you must play a card that matches both the color and the shape of the space that monster is on.\u00a0 Most cards have a single shape in a single color on the card, but some cards will have every color of a particular shape, or all three shapes in one color, and so are much more flexible.<\/p>\n<p>Every player starts with a single card.\u00a0 On your turn, first you\u2019ll draw a card.\u00a0 You can then either play that card or ask for help from any other player that has a more useful card than the ones you have.<\/p>\n<p>There are two special cards in the deck.\u00a0 One allows you to rebuild the wall.\u00a0 The other allows you to boot a monster back to the monster stack (not the dungeon).<\/p>\n<p>After a card has been played (or you\u2019ve all decided to hold on to your cards for now), you move all the monsters one space down the road towards the castle.\u00a0 You also draw a new monster from the monster stack and place it on the first space on the road.<\/p>\n<p>However, monsters being monsters, they don\u2019t always wait their turn!\u00a0 Some monsters are Shovers; after you place them on the board, you move them and all the other monsters one more space along the road.\u00a0 The Marcher behaves just like a Shover except after you\u2019ve moved everyone one space, you draw another monster to follow the Marcher.\u00a0 The Runner may be the worst; Runner monsters cut in line!\u00a0 They immediately jump to the front of the line of monsters.\u00a0 Luckily, after the turn they arrive on the board, these monsters move just like the others.<\/p>\n<p>When a monster moves into the same space as the wall, the wall is destroyed and the monster is sent to the dungeon.\u00a0 If a monster ever reaches the castle, the monsters win.\u00a0 However, if the players catch all the monsters and put them in the dungeon, the castle is safe and the players win.<\/p>\n<p>Fireside Games, which created both\u00a0<em>Castle Panic<\/em>\u00a0games, is based in Austin, Texas.\u00a0 Anne-Marie and Justin decided to turn their hobby of creating board games into a career in 2007, and\u00a0<em>Castle Panic<\/em>\u00a0was their first release.\u00a0 They toured around the state to playtest and show the game off (my first encounter with them and\u00a0<em>Castle Panic<\/em>\u00a0was at a local literary con back then). \u00a0 16 years later, Fireside Games is an award-winning publisher of numerous board games, and the core\u00a0<em>Castle Panic<\/em>\u00a0game is in its second edition.<\/p>\n<p><em>My First Castle Panic<\/em>\u00a0was recently featured in KEYE\u2019s We Are Austin \u2013 Beating the Winter Blues segment.\u00a0 Viewers will get another look at the game and it\u2019s potential as a Spring travel treat on March 16<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Up to four people, ages four and up, can play\u00a0<em>My First Castle Panic<\/em>.
