While Cthulhu, whether in the games of Chaosium or the cool handouts and game-aids of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, often claims the lion\u2019s share of the awards, this year, whimsy and folk-horror dominated.<\/p>\n<p>Whimsy primarily came in the form of\u00a0<em>Daggerheart<\/em>, the big RPG from Darrington Press, the publishing arm of Critical Role. Not only did the quickstart adventure for\u00a0<em>Daggerheart<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Sablewood Messengers<\/em>, take the gold for Best Free Product,\u00a0<em>Daggerheart<\/em>\u00a0also claimed gold for Best Rules and Best Game, as well as silver for Product of the year.<\/p>\n<p>But Daggerheart didn\u2019t carry the banner for whimsy alone. The \u201crustic fantasy\u201d RPG\u00a0<em>Legend in the Mist<\/em>\u00a0was also well-represented, winning silver for Best Production Values, Best Rules, and Best Free Product with their Learn-to-Play comic, and gold in Best Interior Art and Best Supplement for the\u00a0<em>Action Grimoire<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The champion for Folk Horror was\u00a0<em>The Crooked Moon<\/em>\u00a0by Avantris Entertainmemnt, the publishing arm of another live-play series. They took home gold for Best Accessory with their custom tarot deck, Best Cover for the Standard Edition of\u00a0<em>Crooked Moon<\/em>, and Best Production Values for the Ultimate Edition which also won gold in Product of the Year. This must have been the cherry on top of a great year so far for Elantris Entertainment, which eclipsed Brandon Sanderson\u2019s\u00a0<em>Cosmere<\/em>\u00a0RPG as the biggest crowdfunding campaign for an RPG with their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uxZXjHZ45t0&amp;t=1s\"><em>Neon Odyssey<\/em><\/a>, which takes the familiar D&amp;D 5e rules and translates them for space opera adventures with a strong 80s and 90s anime aesthetic. Expect to hear more about that game here soon.<\/p>\n<p>Old familiar names took medals as well. The\u00a0<em>Dolmenwood Monster Book<\/em>\u00a0by Exalted Funeral Press took home silver for Best Monster\/Adversary, being edged out for gold by Ghostfire Gaming\u2019s\u00a0<em>Monsters of Drakkenheim<\/em>. However, the\u00a0<em>Dolmenwood Maps Book<\/em>\u00a0won gold for Exalted Funeral Press. Cubicle 7 won gold in Best Layout and Design with the Player\u2019s Guide for\u00a0<em>Warhammer: the Old World RPG<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dungeons &amp; Kittens<\/em>\u00a0won gold for best Family Game, with\u00a0<em>Dragon Town and the Darkness Below<\/em>\u00a0by YouTuber JP Coovert claiming the silver.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to see what makes these games winners, talk to the RPG experts at your local Dragon\u2019s Lair Comics &amp; Fantasy\u00ae today to learn just how much RPG goodness there is beyond just\u00a0<em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons<\/em>.
