Gaming for Glory In Rome

May 15, 2025

Rome wasn’t built in a day, which is another way of saying that big, complex things take time. Unless they’re the game Quorom, where you play Roman senators jockeying for power and prestige. A game of Quorom generally takes a half-hour. But don’t be surprised if you’re not sure who’s winning until the very end.

As a senator of Rome, you’ll be dueling with your rivals through six different Provinces and four different Aspects of the imperial power: military, intrigue, architecture, and commerce.  Which of the six Provinces (Africa, Hispania, Germania, Macedonia, Gallia, and Asia) is the most important? You can only discover (and possibly influence) that by playing the game.

You begin the game with your hand of cards. You draw from five face-up cards, replace the card you drew from the draw deck, then play one of your cards face-up on the table.  The card will be associated with a Province, and have a province score on the card. You’ll move your marker that many spaces up the influence track for that Province.

Each Province has its own value. You can adjust the value of a province by playing God Cards. Each God Card has a Roman god on it, like Mars or Jupiter.  However, unlike other cards, God Cards remain in your hand after you’ve played them, meaning they take up a slot that would normally be used for point-scoring cards. Each God Card can only be played once, but they do allow you to adjust the value of a Province.

Not only do the scoring cards associated with a Province, they’re also associated with one of the four Aspects of imperial power, and each scores differently. Military cards score as runs while Architecture cards score for variety.

All these different methods of scoring give Quorum its complexity. You might have very high influence in Germania, but if someone plays a God Card that reduces Germania’s importance, it might not be enough to win the game. Dare you spread out your influence in hopes of having at least one point-scoring Province, or do you go all in on a single Province?

Quorom is an easy game to learn in spite of the multiple methods of scoring: draw a card, play a card, rinse and repeat. This game will entertain two-to-four players for about a half-hour. The fun of Quorom comes from the great variety of strategies available to you, meaning being flexible will serve you well, but eventually you’ll need to pick a path or two to victory.  Talk to the fine citizens at your local Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy today about getting your hands on Quorom today.
