Mayday! Your starship is plummeting towards a planet and will break up in the atmosphere. There’s nothing left to do but head to the escape pods. You and up to five other companions are launched from the disintegrating wreck of your vessel to land in scattered locations across an uncharted planet. You don’t know where your companions are, but you can speak with them through your communication devices. Where will you go? What will you see? And who will you meet? Your resources are limited, your goals distant.
Thus does every game of Vantage begin. From Stonemaier Games (of Wingspan fame), Vantage is a cooperative game where you’ll talk with the other players as you attempt to find one another and accomplish various goals. You’ll spend your limited resources traveling across the planet, collecting things, studying things, possibly even smashing things, in your quest to survive and escape.
And uncharted doesn’t mean unoccupied; you’ll meet a variety of creatures, robots, and other, stranger things that you can interact with, either peacefully or violently.
What makes it all work is a series of books you reference depending on the actions you choose to take in any of the places you discover. Each action you can take has its own storybook, and the section you read is based on the locations you enter and the action you choose to take. And the large array of locations and actions interact with your resources and skills, creating a variety of outcomes that makes every playthrough unique.
If you enjoy Choose Your Own Adventure-style stories, games with a deeper narrative component, or the idea of survival in a sci-fi universe, you’ll want to give Vantage look. A single playthrough takes between two and three hours, so it’s a great way to fill an afternoon, and there are solo rules.
