December has finally arrived and with it the rush of the holiday season. Games make great gifts as they also create experiences and memories for players, and this week we’re featuring some of our favorite deck building games! Deck building is a type of game where the main mechanic is the construction of a deck of cards, so all of the following games will have this as the main element of gameplay.
Dominion: Rule as a Monarch working to expand your kingdom and create a true Dominion! Each player starts with a small, identical deck of cards. In the center of the table is a selection of other cards the players can “buy” as they can afford them. Through their selection of cards to buy, and how they play their hands as they draw them, the players construct their deck, aiming to earn as many precious victory points as possible by game end.
Star Realms: This one is a quick deck-building card game of outer space combat. As you play you create a deck of ships and bases to generate trade of combat. This is a two player game, so when you are able to reduce your opponent’s Authority (score) to zero, you win the game!
Legendary: A Marvel deck-building game perfect for fans of that universe! All players pick a villain (and the villains deck of cards) to fight, and then each player then chooses a different Hero deck with which to fight that villain. Additional villains emerge throughout the game as you add more fighting power to your hero deck. If you beat a villain, you get to claim their cards (and points!) to total up when cards run out and the game ends.
Clank!: This fantasy themed game has players sneaking into a dragon’s dungeon to steal his artifacts! Each player starts with the same cards in their deck, but they’ll acquire different cards during their turns. Because cards can do many different things, each player’s deck (and strategy) will become more and more different as the game unfolds. To win, you’ll need to be stealthy enough to steal the artifacts, and brave enough to acquire as many as you can!
