The theme of this month’s painting contest will be Fantasy themed! A fantasy themed miniature will be defined as a model from a setting that features magical and supernatural elements that do not exist in the real world.
Monday September 21st to Friday September 25th –Submission period to bring the miniatures to the store during normal business operating hours. Please check the home page of www.dlair.net/austin for the most up to date hours.
Saturday September 26th – Judging panel vote
Sunday September 27th to Friday October 2nd – Community voting period
Cost: FREE!
A few examples of lines of miniature items we carry at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin include but are not limited to: Warhammer – Age of Sigmar, A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game, Kings of War (Non-historical), Reaper Miniatures (excluding their Chronoscape line), Wizkids Deep Cut Miniatures, Wizkids Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures.
Pickup period for the entered models will be Sunday September 27th to Sunday October 11th. If models are not picked up by the end of the pickup period, Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy will attempt to contact the owners to pick up their models. Any models not picked up by Monday October 12th will be held by Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin for future display purposes.
Winners of the prizes will be announced on Sunday October 4th once community votes are tabulated.
Judging and Prizes
Prizes for figure categories will be determined by the judging panel and the top 2 placements in each will win an award along with having their entry posted on our social media. As stated in the base rules below, each entrant will only be eligible for one prize per category.
The community award will be given to the entry that garners the most votes on our website out of all the entries submitted and will be a single category. We will open the community voting period on September 27th.
Single Figure Category
28-40mm scale figure or mounted figure that falls within the size restriction. Judges will determine if any elements extending beyond the size restrictions matter. Size Restrictions: 2” wide x 2” deep x 2.5” tall.
- 1st place – $30 event voucher towards any purchase at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin
- 2nd place – $10 event voucher towards any purchase at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin
Large Figure/Vehicle Category
Single figures that are larger than the single figure restrictions. Size restriction: 10” wide x 10” deep x 10” tall
- 1st place – $30 event voucher towards any purchase at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin
- 2nd place – $10 event voucher towards any purchase at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin
Group/Unit Category
Two or more models belonging to the same group, unit or faction. Together all models must fit within the size restrictions. Models may be displayed on a unified base or separately. Size restriction: 10” wide x 10” deep x 10” tall

- 2nd place – $10 event voucher towards any purchase at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin
Community Vote
Given to the entry that garners the most votes on our website out of all the entries submitted during the voting period.
- Prize – $20 event voucher towards any purchase at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin
Winners of the prizes will be announced on Sunday October 4th once community votes are tabulated.
Painting contest rules and regulations:
- Models must be submitted during the submission period, no models will be accepted outside the submission period.
- Models must be left in our store where they will be placed on display during the voting period.
- By entering your model into this competition you consent to have your model photographed and posted online. Models submitted may be chosen to be used for promotional purposes for Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy.
- No more than 2 entries per painter per category. Each entrant may only win one award per category.
- All models at minimum must have at least 3 colors per model to qualify for entry.
- Entries must be made at the store (in-person or curbside) by the painter and must be the sole work of the individual whose name is represented on the entry form.
- All decisions of the judges and management are final
- Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin cannot be held responsible for damaged or lost miniatures. We will do our best to keep the miniatures safe and in-tact.
- Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Employees and community member judges are not eligible to enter our painting contests
- Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin ownership reserves the right to disqualify or reject an entry for any reason.
Panel Judging:
- Judging will be done by a panel consisting of 5 judges, 3 judges as employees of Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin and two community members (preferably a tournament organizer or regular judge).
- A panel of 5 judges is being used to help prevent ties.
- Judging will be done in a single sitting by the panel of judges and will be done on a 10 point scale with 1 being poor, 5 being average and 10 being amazing.
- Judging will cover the following categories: Technique, Creativity and Originality
- Technique covers the skills used to build, paint, base and complete the entry.
- Creativity covers the creative choices such as palette and basing choices
- Originality covers the overall presentation of the model
