| At Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy® in Austin, one of our favorite events is Free Comic Book Day (FCBD). It’s the first Saturday of May every year and it’s always loads of fun! From snow cones to the bouncy house and on to free comics, the day is full of fun and laughter. All ages are encouraged to attend our event for games, community, but most importantly… FREE COMICS!
We’re excited to share a preview of some of the titles we’ll be giving away at this year’s event.
Animal Castle from Ablaze Publishing jumped into the hearts of fans with its first volume in late 2021 and this year the next part of the story releases the Wednesday before FCBD. Based on George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, Animal Castle follows a mother cat and her hopefully peaceful rebellion against the dictator of the animal kingdom. The Free Comic Book Day edition will contain excerpts from both the first part and the next part of the series.
Frank Frazetta was one of the comic industry’s most beloved creators and his memory lives on in Opus Comics retellings of some of his most popular series. Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer exploded into the comic book world with its relaunch and hasn’t slowed down. Opus began expanding Frazetta’s former series with Frank Frazetta’s Dawn Attack and they will do so one more time with Frank Frazetta’s Mothman, which is set to release later in May. Tales from all three thrilling series will be contained in this year’s FCBD title, Frazettaverse #0.
Aftershock Press will release a dual comic, Seismic Stories, on FCBD. Featuring new content for critically acclaimed Animosity! series creator, Margueite Bennett, returns as writer for the first of the two stories, which is getting its own omnibus and deluxe edition volume one hardcover in May. The second story, Seismic Stories, launches the upcoming young adult series, The Darkness We Brought Back, by writers Bennett, Alex Segura and Rex Ogle with artist, Joe Eisma. It’s the perfect blend of fun, suspense, adventure and intrigue.
Jeff Lemire is a currently one of the goliaths in the comic industry. The list of comics he plays a part in is an extensive one and includes fan favorites such as Image Comics’ Gideon Falls, DC Comics’ Sweet Tooth and Dark Horse’s Black Hammer. In June, his next series, Fishflies from Image Comics will release with Lemire at the helm as writer and artist. The FCBD title gives us a sneak peak into the adventures of Franny Fox after she runs away from home in a town infested with fishflies and other tiny insects.
