Hunt for Wolverine: What You Need to Know

March 26, 2018

What do I need to read to understand what’s going on?

Back in 2014 the creative team of writer Charles Soule (Letter 44, Curse Words, Star Wars Poe Dameron) and artist Steve McNiven (Old Man Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy, Civil War) had the unenviable task of killing the unkillable Wolverine. The main series of this story-line has been collected in The Death of Wolverine (in stock now for only $19.99). That is all you really need to have read to understand what happened before the recent developments in Logan coming back from the dead to return to the Marvel universe.

How did Logan come back?

Logan popped up in the #1 issue of Legacy that relaunched many of the Marvel series back in 2017. He is shown to be in possession of an Infinity gem (possibly the Reality Gem). Although he was only in this book briefly it was a big deal because he hadn’t been seen since his death 3 years ago. So that leads us to what you should be reading for this upcoming event.

What do I need to read for this event?

Here are some comics that are already available and in-stock that you can pick up to get prepped for the official beginning of the event:

Legacy #1

This oversized one-shot issue sets the tone for the new “normal” in the Marvel Universe. Penned by Jason Aaron with art by Esad Ribic, this book will give you a feel for the events that precede much of what is currently unfolding in the MU as well as the big reveal that Logan is coming back.

Infinity Countdown Prime #1

The Infinity Stones… individually, they grant their wielder great power. Together, they grant the power of a god. Newly reformed and scattered throughout the universe, these artifacts allow the ones who claim them their heart’s desire. Now, as their locations are discovered, forces converge for a battle that will begin taking the universe down a dark path to the END. Jump onto this exciting ride that will lead to the biggest Infinity event yet! Plus: The saga of the Infinity Stones-what they are and how they came to be! From creation to destruction to re-creation, this prose primer will tell you everything you need to know about the legendary cosmic gems!

Infinity Countdown #1-5

This is a 5-issue miniseries that helps set up a larger story in the MU about the Infinity Gems. For the purposes of wanting to read specifically about the return of Wolverine I would recommend picking up at least the “Prime” issue which is #1 of the 5-issue miniseries. Logan is in the first issue and although #2-5 have yet to be released, it would be safe to assume he will show up again.

Here are the books that are forthcoming:

Hunt for Wolverine #1:

Releasing at the end of April, this over-sized one-shot kicks off the story line. Penned by Charles Soule, the writer who killed Wolverine back in 2014 with art by the very talented UT Austin graduate, David Marquez. The story then continues in the pages of four series as Wolverine’s past comes back to haunt the people he’s closest to. Marvel promises that these four miniseries will hearken back to classic Wolverine stories from the past.

But the brutal and horrific nightmare that SABRETOOTH, LADY DEATHSTRIKE and DAKEN uncover could lead to even more death than even these vicious killers can handle.

When Wolverine’s former alter-ego Patch is sighted on the streets of Madripoor, the infamous island of ill-repute, Kitty Pryde pulls together a group of Logan’s closest friends to try and find him: Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, Domino, and Jubilee. What they discover is a twisted cabal of crime and dark mysteries that will take these X-Men from the depths of Lowtown to the stars circling overhead in the Hunt For Wolverine.

Due to a promise made between heroes, the NEW AVENGERS have reassembled to make sure Logan’s body isn’t misused. IRON MAN, SPIDER-MAN, JESSICA JONES and LUKE CAGE discover a deep-state conspiracy that leads to a shocking DNA discovery and metallurgic miracle in the MARVEL UNIVERSE.

WOLVERINE MAY BE THE BEST THERE IS AT WHAT HE DOES… BUT SO ARE THEY! As one of the biggest mysteries in the MARVEL UNIVERSE unfolds, DAREDEVIL assembles a squad of uncanny detectives to track down WOLVERINE – MISTY KNIGHT, FRANK MCGEE and the mutant known as CYPHER. Investigating recent sightings across the globe of a man believed to be LOGAN, the squad uncovers a deep conspiracy with huge ramifications for the RETURN OF WOLVERINE.

Can’t get enough Wolverine?

There are also a series of 9 issues spread over several titles that contain a single-page post-credit scene that fit together to make another fill-in story in the lead up to Hunt for Wolverine #1. These are all marked with a “Where is a Wolverine?” logo. Think of it as a Marvel version of “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego”, except with less dramatic hats and more body hair and claws. If you don’t want to hunt for all of these issues they are listed below.
