REVIEW: Immortal Thor #1

By all the gods, they’ve done it. Somehow, with Immortal Thor #1, Marvel has once again given me everything I could want in a comic book.

In classic Al Ewing fashion, the story opens with an enigmatic quote and a foreboding introduction to an unseen menace, planting questions in the mind of the reader. However, before much thought can be given to this new threat, you are whisked away on what feels like a classic Thor adventure as Ewing demonstrates his deep understanding of what makes this such a unique and beloved hero.

From Asgard to Midgard, from meetings with Sif to Loki, from smiting frost giants to celebrating with the denizens of New York, the Immortal Thor – once again donning his classic Silver Age look – showcases all the excitement befitting a god and all the humanity befitting a mortal. Suffice to say, this is everything I want out of a Thor comic.

Within just one issue we get to see the hope and positivity of the original Lee/Kirby era, the mining and adapting of Norse mythology like in Simonson’s famous 80’s run, an emphasis on smaller more intimate character moments like Straczynski was known for, and plenty of the dark, cosmic horror that has been a mainstay of the title in recent years. Immortal Thor is truly a book for fans of all kinds and if you’ve ever considered diving into this part of the Marvel universe, there’s no better time or place to start.

The hammer swings, the lightning strikes, the wheel turns, and a new age of Thor begins. You’re not going to want to miss it.
