HABA is a family-owned business that specializes in games for young children. A lot of these games include neat wooden pieces and educational themes. Past favorites have included Animal Upon Animal, a game in which players stack cute wooden animals on top of each other.
Logic! CASE is HABA’s newest game. Each card in a stack contains a logic puzzle. The cards sit upright in a little frame with holes in it, holes that match up with the holes in the bottom of the cards. Players pick from a list of possible options by sticking a wooden peg through the hole in the frame beneath their chosen answer. If they’re correct, they can lift the card up freely (that option on the card has a notch that goes to the bottom of the card instead of just a hole) and add it to their stack of correct answers.
There are three versions of Logic! CASE. The first is for ages 4+ and includes picture-focused puzzles. Which of the flowers doesn’t match the set above? Which string leads to the balloon? Which option best completes the picture of an apple? Slide your peg into the hole below your choice and see if you’re right.
The second and third sets of Logic! CASE are for ages 5+ and 6+. The cards for the 5+ set introduce pattern recognition, like recognizing an object from its silhouette, or knowing which of a list of animals is nocturnal. It also offers scrambled pictures of a number and asks the player to figure out which number it is. The cards for 6+ require players to recognize what numbers mean by counting the number of objects in a scene as well as completing mazes and inferring a 3D shape from a 2D diagram.
In addition to sharpening the players’ analytical, pattern-recognition, and number skills, the Logic! CASE games also promote self-education through play. They’re great for quiet-time activities and you can play with them in the back seat of a moving car without too much worry about everything getting dumped on the floor because of a bump or swerve.
