Fresh Start for the Soulbound

August 24, 2021

There’s a great new resource for those of you curious about Cubicle 7’s new Warhammer Age of Sigmar RPG.  A boxed beginners’ set has been released with everything you need to get your toes wet in this bizarre and unique setting.

For those not in the know, Warhammer Age of Sigmar is not a retweaking of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Cubicle 7’s love letter to old-school RPGs.  It’s a completely new game designed from the ground-up to better reflect the more epic and gonzo style and feel of the Age of Sigmar.  Where Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying is a send-up of Europe during the Renaissance, the folks at Cubicle 7 describe the Warhammer Age of Sigmar as adventuring in a heroic age of myth.  Mighty warriors returned from the realms of Death team up with steampunk dwarves and sentient trees to do battle with the Forces of Chaos.  (And don’t think Death is at all happy about those souls being returned to the lands of the living.)

As we’ve come to expect from Cubicle 7, this starter set is chock full of gorgeously illustrated and useful content.  First, there’s a 48 page adventure, “Faltering Light,” that teaches you how to play the game.  You and your friends can just jump right in, without any prep required, learning the rules through play.

To assist, there are five pre-genned characters provided in gatefold form.  Each character has their own connections and goals, allowing players to quickly understand what their character is about.  And yes, one of the pre-gen characters is a Kurnoth Hunter, a sentient tree capable of befriending wild animals.

Finishing the intro adventure doesn’t mean your fun is over.  There’s also a 64 page guide the city of Brightspear, including eight one-page adventures plus additional NPCs, unique and mystical locations, and numerous story hooks you can flesh out to keep your campaign going.

The box also contains three two-sided reference sheets for the rules covering Tests, Magic, and Combat; maps of the city of Brightspear and the lands of Aspiria; tokens to track your Mettle, Soulfire, and Doom; and eight six-sided dice.  In short, everything you need to get started except pencils and friends to play with.

If you enjoy playing the Age of Sigmar wargame but are looking for a more personal way to explore that world, you could do a lot worse than pick up this boxed set to get started in the RPG.  People new to RPGs will find a very friendly way to get started in the growing hobby of roleplaying.  And if you’re just curious what the Age of Sigmar is all about, or wanting to try adventuring in a world full of epic magic, characters, and themes, the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Starter Set is definitely something you should be checking out.  Talk to the RPG experts at your local Dragon’s Lair Comics and Fantasy® about getting your copy today.
