Blackstone Fortress

November 26, 2018

This weekend, Games Workshop releases a fascinating new entry in their Warhammer Quest game series entitled Blackstone Fortress. As the first Quest game to take place in the dark future of the 41st millennium, Blackstone Fortress has a lot going for it. Gone are the classic swords and sorcery of the Old World, or the Mortal Realms of the Age of Sigmar. In their place rests a dark, dangerous exploration for up to five players of an ancient alien bastion in deep space.

The players that dare to delve into the superstructure of the Fortress will take on the roles of one or more characterful individuals in the service of Rogue Trader Janus Draik. A typical Rogue Trader, much like the privateers or pirates of historical fiction, spend their time and efforts towards exploration and acquisition of valuable material goods and resources, and Draik is no different. The crew he brings into the Blackstone Fortress are all equipped with their own unique skillsets and abilities, as well as a set of fantastic, all-new miniatures to represent them.

In a typical game, the players will select their preferred explorers to venture into the depths and set up one of several cooperative combat scenarios to represent the Fortress and its defenses (or perhaps, other invaders or explorers…). Will you select the mysterious robot companion, UR-025? Or maybe the dynamic duo of Ratling twins, Rein and Raus? Of course, one player can select Janus Draik himself, his Navigator Espern Locarno, or any number of other fascinating characters.

As players engage in these combat scenarios to find loot and resources, or potentially find further hazards, they will learn more and more about the forces that look to control the Fortress, the history of the labyrinthine structure itself, and possibly find themselves up against a deadly and furious retinue of mutated Beastmen, Chaos Space Marines, and their nefarious leader, among other foes.

For those who are already engaged fans of 40K, you’ll find a great value in the Blackstone Fortress box. A brand new set of 44 completely new miniatures, all push-fit and requiring no glue, make this a spectacular deal on its own, without even getting into the cards, boards, and dice included to make your own ongoing exploration campaign into the Blackstone Fortress.

And for those of you who may have never dipped a toe into the wonderful and weird worlds in the far future, Blackstone Fortress is a wonderful introduction to a rarely-explored corner of the 40K universe. With a suite of mysterious and engaging characters, each with their own secrets and agendas, and a fantastic cooperative gameplay ruleset, Blackstone Fortress is an absolute must-have for this holiday season.
