Celebrating the Black Panther

August 24, 2020

The world mourned the loss of Chadwick Boseman this past week. He was an upstanding figure in Hollywood, and although his legacy leaves many memorable roles, his portrayal of the Black Panther is perhaps the most celebrated. We wanted to pay tribute to Chadwick this week by picking some of our favorite Black Panther stories and recommending them to you.

Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther?: If you’ve never read a Black Panther series before, then this is a great place to start! It is a great introduction to not only our titular character, but also other well known and beloved characters of Wakanda, including his sister Shuri.

Black Panther: Panther’s Rage: This is one of the earliest storylines for Black Panther (written in the 1970’s!), and contains the Black Panther’s first fight with archnemesis Killmonger. This series was written over years and has the length, complexity, and comprehensiveness of a novel.

Black Panther: World of Wakanda: Winner of the 2018 Eisner for Best Limited series and helmed almost entirely by black female creators (Roxanne Gay, Writer and Alitha Martinez, Artist), this book centers around the women of Wakanda, highlighting their importance to the Black Panther story and contributions to their country.

Black Panther Vol 1: Nation Under Our Feet: Centering around themes of religion, politics and history, this story is perhaps the most pertinent to our society today. It examines the ability of power to corrupt even good intentions, and how even long standing legacies must evolve.

We hope that you’ll enjoy reading these stories, and celebrating Chadwick and his contribution to our world and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. #Wakandaforever
