The long anticipated Sandman series based on the landmark comic written by Neil Gaiman finally launched over the weekend on Netflix, and we were thrilled to see some of our favorite characters brought to life in film.
The Netflix series does an excellent job at capturing the surreal, beautiful and detailed artwork that is a quintessential element of the comic. The casting of Tom Sturridge as Dream was pitch perfect, as well as Boyd Hollbrook’s portrayal of the nightmare Corinthian.
The only problem is that the series is so easy to blow through in a short amount of time, but luckily we have you covered there. Even if you have read this series before this is a great time to revisit this Vertigo classic as although the tv series did a fantastic job capturing the main essence of the story, there are many nuances that are missed.
The Sandman comic series is collected in 10 volumes containing all 75 issues, and this is where you’ll want to begin your journey. Specifically with volume 01: Preludes and Nocturnes (realistically, you’re going to want to pick up at least a few volumes at a time. This is not a story you’ll want to put down!).
There are also a ton of graphic novels with stories from the extended Sandman universe that you can check out if you’re looking for a one off read, including Sandman Endless Nights, which features seven stories from seven artists covering the entire Endless family.
Sandman Overture is another that you’ll want to check out. Although technically a prequel to the original series, it is best appreciated by readers familiar with the universe. We can’t wait to help you fully immerse yourself in this richly detailed world!
