The year of ’22 provided us all with some amazing comics to enjoy, but a wonderful little fantasy adventure that may have escaped your notice is Twig. Skottie Young and Kyle Strahm teamed up to bring a burgeoning young hero to life in a whimsical coming of age tale focused on friendship and perseverance.
The story opens with our titular Twig late to his first assignment after inheriting his Father’s mantle. He struggles from that point on with setback after setback as he tries to fulfill his mission in time! He both brings an old friend and makes a new one during his journey, and runs into plenty of colorful and dynamic characters.
Although this story is recommended for ages 12+, advanced younger readers will have no problems here. The themes are all ages friendly and even the scariest monster depictions are more fun and interesting than frightening. The character design is the crown jewel of this series. There are lots of furry, fuzzy, slimy and of course colorful monsters inhabiting the fantasy realm Twig is exploring, as well as on his own home world.
Fans of Monsters Inc. and Jeff Smith’s BONE series should be sure to check this one out!
