Looking for a fun macabre game to play this October? Gloom is perfect for you! The world of Gloom is a sad and benighted place. The sky is gray, the tea is cold, and a new tragedy lies around every corner. Debt, disease, heartache, and packs of rabid flesh-eating mice—just when it seems like things can’t get any worse, they do. But some say that one’s reward in the afterlife is based on the misery endured in life. If so, there may yet be hope—if not in this world, then in the peace that lies beyond.
Revel in dispensing tragedies upon members of an unfortunate family as the goal of the game is to have your characters suffer as much as possible! Meanwhile, you’ll enjoy bestowing cheerfulness and joyous occasions upon your opponent’s character cards in order to improve their self worth and happiness. You’ll never be more disappointed to see a promotion, birthday or wedding come your way.
The gameplay is both innovative and easy because the cards are transparent. As you stack new modifiers on old ones the character card’s self worth score updates according to what shows through or is obscured by the new top card.
There is an incredible array of different editions to play in the Gloom universe, and you can mix and match them as much as you want as long as you have at least one base (standalone) game to start with.
- Standalone versions: Gloom 2nd Edition, Munchkin Gloom, Gloom of Thrones, Gloom in Space, Fairytale Gloom, Cthulhu Gloom and Gloomier.
- Expansions: The Gloom Chronicles, Gloom: Unhappy Homes, Gloom: Unwelcome Guests, Gloom: Unfortunate Expeditions, and Gloom: Unquiet Dead. Just shuffle these cards into your base game of Gloom to add morbid new Modifiers, Events, and Untimely Deaths!
The artwork is unique and quirky, with a Burtonesque feel that matches perfectly with the mood of the game. It’s quick and easy to learn, and although the base game allows for 2-4 players, you can easily expand that to many more by adding in expansion cards.
